Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Activity of Some Indole Substituted Propanoic Acid

An efficient, facile synthesis has been developed for the preparation of indole-2-propanoic acid derivatives from indole-3-carbaldehyde. In this article a series of (2E)-1-(4-substitutedphenyl)-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (3.1 to 3.5) and of 2-{3-[(1E)-3-(4-substitutedphenyl)-3-oxoprop-1-en-1-yl]-1H-indol-1-yl} propanoic acid (3.6-3.10) have been designed and synthesized starting from indole-3-carbaldehyde (3). The structures of all synthesized compounds were supported by spectral and analytical analysis. These compounds also have been screened for antimicrobial activities in order to evaluate the possibility of the derivatives to be used as potential chemotherapeutic agents.
